Nutrition Education & Access

Prescription for Health Program

Please note: As a result of COVID-19 and the limited availability of staff, the following activities for the Prescription for Health program are on hold:

  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • Health coaching
  • Information about community resources

The Prescription for Health (PFH) program connects participants who are food insecure with the means to acquire fresh and local fruits and vegetables at the Benton Harbor Farmers’ Market.

Participants receive up to $100 in PFH dollars to spend throughout the duration of the market season. The market is held weekly, on Wednesdays, from July through September.

In addition to improving access to fresh and local produce, the PFH program offers health and nutrition education; blood pressure and weight monitoring; and assistance connecting community members to community resources. These activities are open to all market patrons.

The PFH program was developed to support the reduction of nutrition-related risk factors (i.e., obesity) and improve access to health information and health care resources for community members who are food insecure. This program also provides an opportunity to support local farmers who sell produce at the market.
